I have toured many private schools in Charlotte.

More than I care to count. Open houses, individual tours, shadow days, and everything in between. And if there is one thing I have learned from all of those visits, it is this.

What you see on a tour is only half the picture. What you feel is the other half.

The first time I toured private schools in Charlotte I was completely unprepared. I walked in with no questions written down, no checklist and no idea what I was actually supposed to be evaluating. I left every tour thinking the school seemed great without being able to tell you exactly why.

It was not until I started asking the right questions and paying attention to the right things that I truly understood how different schools actually are from each other. Even schools that look remarkably similar on paper can feel completely different when you walk through the door.

Here is what I wish I had known before my very first tour.

Let me be honest with you about something.

When I first started the Charlotte private school application process, I genuinely thought it would be straightforward. Fill out a form. Submit some documents. Wait for a response. How complicated could it really be?

Very. Very complicated.

The Charlotte private school application process is one of the most layered, time-sensitive, and detail-heavy processes I have ever navigated as a parent. And I say that as someone who has been through it multiple times across different schools, different grade levels, and different seasons of life.

Each time I went through it, I learned something new. Each time I wished I had a clearer roadmap from the very beginning. And each time I walked away with more insight about what this process actually demands from families who are serious about getting into the right school.

When my family moved to Charlotte in November 2017, I thought I had the school thing figured out.

We bought our house in a great school district. We checked the GreatSchools rankings. We felt confident. As first-time parents, that felt like enough, and honestly it was all we knew to look for at the time.

Then I started attending open houses.
