As Uptown, South End, Dilworth, Elizabeth and Plaza Midwood have filled with families who would rather walk to dinner than mow an acre, a small but distinctive set of schools has taken root — and several of the city's most storied campuses sit just minutes south of the skyline.

What center city families trade in quantity they gain in character. An urban K-8 that uses museums and libraries as an extended campus. Historic parish schools woven into streetcar-era neighborhoods. And within a reasonable drive down Providence or Park Road — the full strength of Charlotte's independent school corridor.

  • Myers Park offers iconic tree-lined boulevards and a deep sense of community. Dilworth offers historic charm with walkable streets and a vibrant community feel. Cotswold and Elizabeth offer a more eclectic urban lifestyle. Eastover sits just south of Myers Park, offering some of Charlotte's most prestigious addresses with easy access to the Big Three campuses.

  • Most Midtown private schools are easily accessible from the Myers Park and Dilworth corridors. Commutes are generally under 15 minutes within the area for schools located in Dilworth and Myers Park. For families considering the Big Three in South Charlotte, plan for approximately 15 to 20 minutes without traffic — and considerably more during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up on Providence Road. Always drive the route at actual school drop-off time before committing.

  • The Catholic pathway from Parish K through 5 to Holy Trinity through Charlotte Catholic is the center city's most affordable full K through 12 private route, especially at parishioner rates.

    Some private schools offer limited bus routes for an additional fee. Check each school's website directly for current transportation options and routes available in your area.

    Applying from Uptown to the southern independents? Admissions teams know the commute is doable — it will not count against you.
