INTRODUCTION
When my family moved to Charlotte in November 2017, I thought I had the school thing figured out.
We bought our house in a great school district. We checked the GreatSchools rankings. We felt confident. As first-time parents, that felt like enough, and honestly it was all we knew to look for at the time.
Then I started attending open houses.
First the magnet schools. Then the charter schools. And somewhere along the way I stumbled into my first private school open house and everything shifted.
The environment. The class sizes. The community. The intentionality behind every decision the school made. It was a completely different world from what I had been exploring, and I was not prepared for how much it would change our thinking.
We applied to several schools for our daughter, and she was accepted. And this is where I made my first big mistake.
We chose the smaller, more affordable option. She was only five years old; we were not sure how long we would be in Charlotte, and high school felt like a lifetime away. It seemed like the safe and practical choice at the time.
But we quickly realized it was not the right fit. And by the time we knew that, our spot at our preferred school was long gone.
What followed was a journey that taught me more about the Charlotte private school landscape than I ever expected to learn.
We experienced waitlists. We navigated the pandemic. We made decisions under pressure. We reapplied. We started over. And through every twist and turn, I learned something new about this process. What to do, what not to do, and what questions to ask before you fall in love with a school.
Years later, when it was time to find the right school for my son, I approached the search completely differently. Armed with everything I had learned, I knew exactly what to look for, what questions to ask, and what mistakes to avoid.

WHAT COVID DID TO THE CHARLOTTE PRIVATE SCHOOL MARKET
What I also witnessed during those years was how dramatically COVID changed the Charlotte private school landscape, and it has never gone back to what it was before.
Three distinct groups of families flooded the Charlotte private school market almost simultaneously.
The first group was returning alumni. Charlotte natives who had moved away and came back home during COVID, bringing their families with them and already knowing the value of Charlotte private schools.
The second group was relocating families. Families moving to Charlotte from bigger and more expensive cities like Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Coming from markets where private school tuition was even higher, Charlotte felt like incredible value, and they came ready to enroll.
The third group was what I call the Covid converts. Charlotte parents who had never considered private school before but found themselves in an impossible situation during the pandemic. With CMS going virtual, many essential workers and parents who simply could not manage virtual learning at home discovered that Charlotte private schools stayed open and in person, and they never looked back.
The result was a private school landscape that became more competitive, more expensive, and harder to navigate almost overnight.
That is the Charlotte private school market you are entering today. And that is exactly why having the right information from someone who has been through it matters more than ever.
STEP 1: UNDERSTAND THE TYPES OF PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN CHARLOTTE
This is the step most families skip, and it costs them weeks of wasted time.
I started with magnet and charter schools because I didn't even know private schools were an option. Then I discovered that Charlotte has over 100 private schools, which is more than any other county in North Carolina, and they are all very different from each other.
Charlotte has several distinct types of private schools, including Independent and College Preparatory schools, Christian and Faith-Based schools, Catholic schools, Montessori schools, Classical schools, Hybrid schools, and Specialized schools for students with learning differences.

STEP 2: ESTABLISH YOUR BUDGET BEFORE YOU FALL IN LOVE
Private school tuition in Charlotte ranges from approximately $4,700 to $36,500 per year depending on the type of school. Falling in love with a school that is outside your budget is a painful experience that is completely avoidable.
Here is what most families forget. Do not just budget for the first year.
Private school is a long-term financial commitment. Depending on which grade your child enters and where the school ends, you could be looking at an 8- to 12-year journey. And tuition does not stay the same.
Charlotte private schools have historically increased tuition anywhere from 2 to 7 percent per year, and that percentage has varied from school to school and year to year. Some years the increase is modest. Other years, especially post-COVID, it has been much higher.
Here is a simple way to think about it. If you are paying $20,000 per year today and the school increases tuition by just 4 percent annually by year 8, you could be paying closer to $27,000 per year for the same school. That is a significant difference and one that catches many families off guard.
Before committing to a school, ask about the average annual tuition increase over the last 5 years, whether payment plans are available, what financial aid and scholarship options exist, and whether financial aid awards increase alongside tuition increases.
Also ask every school about the NC Opportunity Scholarship and ESA+ program. Many Charlotte families qualify, and it can make a significant difference in your annual investment.
Important to note. The NC Opportunity Scholarship has an official list of participating schools. Not every private school in Charlotte accepts it, so before you fall in love with a school, check whether they are on the approved list first at ncseaa.edu.
STEP 3: UNDERSTAND THAT SCHOOL RANKINGS ARE JUST A STARTING POINT
One of the biggest lessons I learned early on is that a school ranking tells you very little about whether a school is the right fit for your child.
When we first moved to Charlotte, we bought our house based on the public school district and checked the GreatSchools rankings and stopped there. And while rankings can be a useful starting point, they do not tell you what the classroom environment actually feels like, how teachers interact with students, what the parent community is like, how the school handles children with different learning styles, or what the school values and culture truly are.
A school can have a great ranking and be completely wrong for your child. And a school with a lower ranking can be exactly the right fit.
This is why visiting schools in person is non-negotiable.
STEP 4: START YOUR SEARCH EARLIER THAN YOU THINK
Most Charlotte families start their private school search in September or October thinking they have plenty of time. But many of the most competitive schools have application deadlines as early as December 31, and enrollment spots fill up fast.
And if life happens and you need to reapply, you are starting the entire process from scratch. Application fees, assessments, tours, and interviews all over again.
Here is a brief overview of the Charlotte private school application timeline. Please note there is much more involved in each of these months than what is listed here.
August through September is for research and creating your school shortlist. October through November is open house season. November through December is when application windows open, with many deadlines falling between December 31 and February 1. February through March is when admissions decisions and financial aid letters are sent. March through April is when enrollment deposit deadlines arrive.
Start your research at least 12 to 18 months before your child's intended start date, especially if you are considering the most competitive schools in Charlotte.

STEP 5: VISIT SCHOOLS IN PERSON
No amount of online research replaces walking through the front door.
I have toured schools that looked perfect on paper and felt completely wrong in person. And the schools I almost skipped turned out to be exactly what we were looking for.
When you visit a school, pay attention to how students interact with each other and with teachers, whether the campus feels welcoming and safe, how the admissions team makes you feel, and whether the school energy matches your family values.
Trust your instincts. You know your child better than any ranking or review ever could.

STEP 6: ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS AT OPEN HOUSES
Most parents go to open houses and forget to ask the questions that actually matter. Here are some of the questions worth bringing with you.
What is the student-to-teacher ratio and does it change as grades go up? How does the school handle a child who is struggling academically or socially? How is technology used in the classroom, especially in the lower grades? How much time do students have for outdoor play, recess, and PE? What is the teacher retention rate? And what makes this school genuinely different from other Charlotte private schools?
There are many more questions worth asking, and the right ones will depend entirely on your child, your family values, and what matters most to you in a school community.

STEP 7: UNDERSTAND HOW LOCATION IMPACTS YOUR SEARCH
Where you live in Charlotte matters more than most families realize.
We bought our house thinking about public school districts and not private school proximity. It was only after we committed to private school that we realized how much location matters for your daily commute and morning routine.
South Charlotte, covering Myers Park, SouthPark, Ballantyne, Weddington, Waxhaw, and surrounding areas, is home to the highest concentration of private schools in Charlotte, including the most competitive independent schools.
But outstanding private schools exist across the entire greater Charlotte region from Huntersville and Davidson in the north to Concord and Kannapolis in the east.
Knowing which schools are close to your home or workplace can save significant time every week over the course of a school year.
